Week 4 Story Laboratory

Image
I liked how the videos talked about boundless creativity is not always helpful. This is so true and I have already run into this problem many times. I was a director for University Sing which is OU's avenue for people to sing and dance on stage and develop a show. Every year there is a new theme some being more specific than others. The year I was a director, the theme was extremely broad. This made it difficult for us directors to come up with a good show because there was such little guidance into what to write about. When watching some of these videos, that experience was the first thing I thought about.  Another great video was the video about what makes a hero. This was not as personal as some of the other videos, but it did give me some great advice on how to develop stories about heroes. I found it to be very useful and they made the video interesting and fun to watch. This video also made me think of the hero movies I have seen and really made me realize the plot usually f

Feedback Strategies

Image
(Feedback:  Mental Itch )  Personally, I am not someone that thrives off of getting positive feedback. I do my work my way and do it well so I do not need someone to tell me that it is "good." On the other hand, if my work is not good, I would like to know what I did wrong and be able to fix it.  Even though I do not personally function off of positive feedback, I am aware that others do. When reading the article "Five Reasons to Stop Saying 'Good Job'" I was intrigued by the fact that Alfie Kohn discourages the use of the phrase "good job." I do agree with many of the points the author made that the phrase is used too much and it is starting to lose its meaning. This article made some good points but I disagreed with the majority of it. I think you should encourage kids because if you fail to do so then they won't believe in themselves. This is not always the case but it is for some children.  Alfie Kohn Another article I found interesting w

KARMA The Good the Bad and the Ugly This is from a past storybook and it really gave me some good ideas. I like how it explains Karma in a simplistic way in the title but then goes into detail with separate stories. I really like the story of the king and karma because that is the type of stories I would write. I love writing about rulers losing everything and trying to get it back.  Karma This is the link to the wikipedia page about karma. While this is not a story, it provides me with valuable information regarding karma and gives me some inspiration for future stories. I am very excited to see what all I can come up with.  Karma Dreams This is another past storybook but it provided me with a lot of interesting ideas. I like the dreams portion of this storybook and think that could be an interesting idea to use for some stories int he future. I really enjoyed reading some of these stories and it made me want to write about Karma even more.  ( Karma )

Week 3 Story: The Chase

Image
One day, a little boy, his father, and his grandfather went out on a hunt. The goal was to go out and turn the young boy into a man by getting him his first deer. The family was trudging through the woods trying to find the perfect spot to try and see some deer. Eventually, the boys found the spot and saw a deer.  After spotting the deer, they started making their way across the mountain and started tracking it. Hours and hours of searching later, they finally found the deer. It was perfectly still and all you could hear was the wind blowing through the trees. The deer was on the bank of the river just about to take a drink of water when all of the sudden, a noise spooks the deer.  The deer immediately takes off running and the boys start chasing it. On and on the men rode on their horses and the deer kept sprinting along. Finally, the boy got close enough to the deer to shoot it with an arrow right through the heart. Once hit, the deer immediately fell; however, this was no ordinary

Reading Notes Ramayana Part B

Image
The Chase The chase starts with a man named Rama chasing a deer through the woods Rama shoots the deer with an arrow through the heart Maricha's soul springs out from the deer and cries out "Save ME!" Sita was instantly filled with sadness Rama thought he had slain Raksasha who is the brother of Ravana This was an interesting story and would work really well with a storybook about reincarnation. I see a lot of potential in that category.  Bibliography:  Indian Myth and Legend  by Donald A. Mackenzie (1913). ( Deer )

Feedback Thoughts

Rejection This was very interesting to read about. Personally, I am afraid of rejection and this changes how I go about doing things. Reading this article was a nice refresher on how I should not be so afraid of rejection and pursue things with passion. It is always scary when you work really hard for something and then people end up not liking what you have done. What reading this article taught me is to do things you are passionate about and work your hardest and at the end of the day, you should be proud of what you done and learn from that experience.  Fixed Mindset This article was also very helpful. A lot of the time I get so stuck in one way of thinking, I forget how to be creative again. Constantly changing how you look at things is very important in growing as a person. It is hard to look at things from a different perspective; however, that is a great skill and such a useful tool to have for the rest of our lives. If we can learn how to change a fixed mindset, not only will

Topic Brainstorm

Idea 1: Birth Stories ( storybook ) I love birth stories. I think it is fascinating to learn about the birth of certain people or gods and goddesses. I think I could also do some really cool things with some of these ideas and rewrite some stories in a new way. Furthermore, I would also love to read some birth stories and learn about more of them than what I have already learned about.  Idea 2:  Reincarnation I love the idea behind reincarnation and how it shapes the actions and diets of some people. I have always found it fascinating and think that there is so much more for me to learn about it. I think that I could also come up with some really cool ideas for stories with some good reincarnation story inspiration. This would be a really cool topic to write about.  Idea 3:  Karma The concept and belief in karma is very interesting. Some might call it a controversial topic while others would call you crazy for not believing in it. Karma would be a great topic to do a storybook on beca

Week 2 Story The Clumsy Monkey

Image
The Clumsy Monkey One day, two monkeys were playing in the forest. They were wandering around and jumping from tree to tree. They came up with the idea to play tag and began to do just that. As they were running around and swinging from trees, one of the monkeys hit his head on a coconut. You can probably guess that this was the clumsy monkey. No damage was done to the monkey, and in fact, it inspired them to play a new game.  The monkeys came up with the idea to play catch with the coconut. They were having a lot of fun playing catch until the clumsy monkey struck again. The coconut was thrown to him and he tried to catch it like O'Dell Beckham and it fell about sixty feet down from the trees and hit the ground. Once it hit the ground, it made a huge BANG!  Below the trees there were many animals socializing, drinking water, and chatting amongst themselves. All of the sudden, this loud noise hits and causes a mass panic. There was a rabbit and a lion, a deer and a wolf, and a bea

Week 2 Reading Anthology

The Foolish, Timid Rabbit I enjoyed the simplicity of this story. It was a fun and enjoyable read. There were a lot of writing ideas I took from this story. One of the ideas was to make a story so simple that it turns out to be funny. I loved the idea of the coconut falling and causing so much panic among all the animals. I think it would be funny to rewrite this story from the perspective of the monkey that dropped the coconut. Overall, this was a great read and was very enjoyable.  ( Rabbit ) Bibliography:  Story source : Jataka Tales by Ellen C. Babbitt.

Week 2 Reading Overview

Image
I chose the public domain version of the Ramayana. The reasoning behind my choice is because after taking mythology and folklore, I am more comfortable with this style and find it easiest to navigate.  Comic 1: Ancestors of Rama I chose this comic because I thought it would be very interesting to learn about the history of Rama. Each ancestor has a unique story and it is very fun learning about them.  Comic 2:  The downfall of an arrogant King This comic seemed very interesting because I love stories about arrogance and how it always ends up biting people in the rear. I was always taught to be humble and I love stories that punish the arrogant. It is even better when the arrogant become humbled and learn from their mistakes.  ( Vali ) Video 1: Hindu Creation Stories I chose this video because I love creation stories. I am fascinated by hinduism and find this to be a very interesting and engaging topic to look at.  Video 2: Harry Potter Meets Hindu Mythology I chose this video because
